Lieutenant Colonel William L. Smith grew up in southeastern Massachusetts. He joined the Marines and serve during peaceful times. He then joined the army when the Vietnam War began. Mr. Smith served in Vietnam for 26 months. During this time, he served in the battles of Pleiku, Kontum, Dak To, Tet Offensive, and "Little Tet". He earned medals such as the Republic of Vietnam, Cross of Gallantry, Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and US Vietnam Service with six stars. He is retired from service and lives in Mt. Aetna with his wife.
